At the end of World War 2, in 1945, there was a surplus in the production of metal. This was used by a small company, Hetteen Hoist & Derrick, which made one-of-a-kind machines for farmers. This work was seasonal in nature and the owners of the company spent the rest of their time navigating the great outdoors. 

 

Wanting to find a fast and easy way to cover great distances in the snow so they could hunt and fish, the men behind Polaris® built their first functional snowmobile. While this was more of a personal project for them, interest in the machines grew throughout the region, inspiring a stronger manufacturing presence.

 

Keeping Up

The company had been renamed Polaris® by 1960 and had become a more recognizable name in the industry. Their vehicles had gone from primarily transporting vehicles to sport beasts. This led to a rather sudden boom in the demand, which made the owners realize that the company needed greater management skills to keep up. 

 

Polaris® was sold to Textron, and the growth continued well into the 1970s. Unfortunately, this was the time when a recession hit the country. This in turn impacted not only Polaris® but the entire powersports industry. So great was the toll that by the end of the decade only three manufacturers still remained in the market. 

 

Focus on Innovation

In 1984, Polaris® burst into the ATV market, which has so far been dominated by Japanese companies.. Then in 1990, Polaris® became the first major US powersports manufacturer to launch a personal watercraft (PWC) line, gaining customer growth by proving their reliability. The greatest strength of Polaris® has been their ability to adapt with the changing times while staying true to their loyal customer base.

 

With each product launched, the company has focused on improving safety, durability, stability and customer experience. They have also continued to be involved with the community and tackled the task of solving problems enthusiastically. This has led to Polaris® becoming one of the most-loved powersports companies in the US.
