Developing The WaveRunner®

In the late 1980s, Yamaha, having already joined the boat market during the middle of the 20th century, decided to expand their marine-based offerings with a personal watercraft like no other available. The sit-down, open-stern styled PWC they christened the WaveRunner captured the public’s attention due to its agile handling and easy rideability that made it ideal for new riders.

Throughout the next decade, the company continued to design and manufacture further offshoots of this initial craft to maintain their position as a top name in the personal watercraft market.

2002’s FX140 WaveRunner redefined standards by being the first PWC with a four-stroke engine available on the market. Thanks to its smoothly-running motor, stable hull and high fuel economy, this Yamaha WaveRunner PWC skyrocketed in popularity during the early 2000s.

The use of NanoXcel, a lightweight composite material, in newer WaveRunners began in 2008. Using this material made these crafts 25% lighter in weight than their predecessors, which had been constructed from a sheet-molded composite.

WaveJammer® & WaveBlaster®

Right after the Yamaha WaveRunner was released, the company added the WaveJammer to its lineup in 1987. The small hull and single-occupancy seating made this model especially deft in the water.

In 1991, this model was discontinued, to be replaced in 1993 with the WaveBlaster. This Yamaha PWC featured two seats and a powerful engine that felt like riding a motorcycle through the water.

SuperJet™

But Yamaha didn’t stop there! In 1990, they created a stand-up style PWC that remains in production well into the 21st century. The SuperJet features a two-stroke engine that’s fast in the water, making for a sportier and more active ride than sit-down styles.
